High Performance Tennis Coaching
As a junior player Lan reached no1 in South Africa in the U/16 & U/18 age groups.
Lan spent 11yrs playing on the ATP tour where he reached a high of 177 in singles and 27 in doubles.
He played in over 20 Grand Slams with his best result being a doubles 1/4 finals at Wimbledon. He won 4 ATP tour doubles titles and made 4 finals. During his time on the tour Lan was elected by his peers to represent them on the ATP player council.
After retiring from professional tennis in 2000 Lan spent 2yrs as the men’s assistant coach at the University of California Berkeley.
From 2003 - 2013 Lan ran his own small academy in Queenstown, a small town of 20,000 in the South Island of New Zealand. During this time Lan helped 7 young local players gain scholarships to US colleges. The best of these being Riki and Ben McLachan who both played for and graduated from Berkeley. Both boys were top 50 ITF juniors and Ben has gone on to a successful pro career. Ben is still playing and has so far won 6 ATP tour doubles titles and made 6 finals. With a Semi Final at the Australian Open and Quarter Finals at the US Open and Wimbledon. Ben has a career high doubles ranking of 18.
From 2013 - 2019 Lan worked for Tennis New Zealand as a National Coach and Selector. He was responsible for selecting the National Squad and all the National junior teams. He toured internationally with the National Squad players and was the Coach/Captain of the U/16 Junior Davis Cup / Junior Fed Cup teams as well as the U/14 World Junior Teams boys and girls.
During his time with Tennis New Zealand Lan also spent some time working with NZ Pro’s Michael Venus, Marcus Daniel and Artem Sitak. Lan was the NZ coach at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
